About Special Presenter: Teresa Sabankaya
Storytellers share their inspirations through words written or spoken, with photos or video, and in art, music, or dance. Teresa Sabankaya, founder and owner of the Bonny Doon Garden Company in Santa Cruz, CA, is an expert on the language of flowers, an art form believed to have originated with the Turkish Selam, which is not only a greeting, but also a language of objects.
Sabankaya, author of a forthcoming book on the subject, (release date: Fall of 2017), has been lauded as one of the most innovative florists in the San Francisco Bay area, and her floral creations have been exhibited at the "Bouquets to Art" exhibition at De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, the National Trust Riloli's Estate in Woodside, and multiple other floral design and garden shows.
Her floral styles have graced multiple wedding blogs and magazines, including Smitten, Sweet Violet Bride, Style Me Pretty, and Green Wedding Shoes, and she is featured in Amy Stewart's acclaimed book, Flower Confidential, as well as her blog.
In the PBS documentary, "Botany of Desire" (based on Michael Pollen's bestseller of the same name), Sabankaya was compared to "a florist from 100 years ago," and her trademarked "Bonny Doon Posies" -- part of her retail business from the beginning -- have been showcased in media including "CBS Sunday Morning," Romantic Homes magazine, and newspapers that include the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
"It's easy and fun to incorporate the historical language of flowers into your life today. sharing a gift of a posy to another is a very meaningful way to express your sentiments for many occasions: A birthday, a newborn baby … even your deepest condolences," said Sabankaya, who opened Bonny Doon Garden Company (1101 Fair Avenue in Santa Cruz) in 1999 as a full-service floral design studio, florist, and botanical gift shop. "When someone receives a gift of a posy, it's not only a beautiful arrangement, but the message the flowers convey is strong and very memorable, and will have a great impact on the recipient."
Her new book, will take readers on a fascinating journey through history, from Constantinople to England, telling the colorful tale of the language of flowers and the language of objects, through the travels of a British aristocrat, Lady Mary Montagu.
Lady Mary became fascinated by the Selam and its tradition of gifting boxes filled with various objects to another person. Each object carried a secret language -- even a pebble had a verse or meaning attached -- a tradition Montagu brought with her when she returned to her home country. Thus, the language of flowers evolved into a phenomenon in Victorian England.
Sabankaya is a certified green gardener and a member of slowflowers.com, an online directory of florists who source their materials locally. She also is a member of greatgardenspeakers.com.
